A person who moves from one country to another is called an immigrant.
A hundred years ago, many immigrants traveled to the United States on ships. Their journey across the ocean took about two weeks.
It was hard to move around on the ships. The space for immigrants was cramped with people and their things.
Everything was damp from water seeping into the ship from outside. Many people got sick. Some people did not survive. They died before the journey ended.
